It’s a common question in the design world. Should you place the TV above the fireplace or not? Many believe that it shouldn’t, many believe it should. We break down arguments for both sides and offer some solutions.

Problem

Putting the TV above the fireplace is a longstanding debate in design, yet it is something that is often done. Here are some reasons why:

  • Easy access to big screen entertainment for sports, movie nights, etc.
  • Fairly easy to mount
  • Nowhere else to put it / families want it in the room they’ll spend the most time watching TV
  • Jacks and plugs are likely already there

Now, here are some reasons many argue that the tv above the fireplace is said to not be a good location.

  • Ruins the aesthetic of the space
  • Neck strain / too high above eye level when sitting on the sofa
  • Question of where to hide wires safely
  • Fire could damage TV

Solutions

Now don’t you worry. Whether you’re a fan of a fireplace TV or not, there are options for you to ensure you make the best decision for your stylish home.

Put it Somewhere Else

In an instance where you might have a formal sitting room or a front space, use those areas for lounging and conversation. Then put your TV in the more relaxed living room, more towards the back of the house. If possible, you could even make an entertainment room with an extra room in your house.

Frame TVs

If you don’t have other space to put the TV, or simply like having it above the fireplace, consider purchasing a frame TV so you can showcase artwork when you aren’t watching. This ensures that the specially curated style and design of the space isn’t compromised.
